Jan IngenHousz Institute (JII) operates the openJII website (the Platform).
This page explains how JII as controller collects, uses, discloses, and protects personal data when you use the Platform, and the choices you have regarding your personal data.

WHAT PERSONAL DATA JII COLLECTS AND PROCESSES
JII collects the following personal data relating to you:
Personal data you provide: if you create an account to use the Platform, use the Platform or communicate with JII, JII collects and processes:
Account Information: including but not limited to your name, contact information, account credentials and date of birth.
User Content: the input you provide to the Platform including the GPS coordinates of the place where the measurements have taken place.
Communication Information: your name, contact information e.g., email address, and the contents of the messages you send and the answers JII provides.
Other Information You Provide: information provided by you, for example via forms, or support functionalities on the Platform.
Personal data JII receives from your use of the Platform: When you visit or use the Platform, JII receives the following information about your visit or use.
Log Information: information that your browser or device automatically sends when you use the Platform. Log data includes your Internet Protocol address, browser type and settings, the date and time of your request, and how you interact with the Platform.
Usage Information: information about your use of the Platform, such as the types of content that you view or engage with, the features you use and the actions you take, as well as your time zone, country, the dates and time of access, user agent and version, type of computer or mobile device, and your computer connection.
Device Information: information about the device you use to access the Platform, such as the name of the device, the operating system, the device identification number and the browser you use and its settings.
Location Information: JII may determine the general area from which your device accesses the Platform based on information like its IP address for security reasons and to make your Platform experience better, for example to protect your account by detecting unusual login activity or to provide more accurate responses.
Cookies and Similar Technologies: JII uses cookies, pixels and similar technologies to operate and administer the Platform and improve your experience. Essential cookies are required to operate the Platform. JII may also use non-essential cookies for analytics, personalization, or advertising purposes in accordance with applicable law. You can manage cookies via your browser settings.
WHY JII PROCESSES PERSONAL DATA
JII may use Personal Data for the following purposes:
To provide and maintain the Platform;
To notify you about changes to the Platform;
To allow you to participate in interactive features of the Platform when you choose to do so;
To provide customer care and support;
To provide analysis or valuable information so that JII can improve the Platform;
To monitor the usage of the Platform;
To detect, prevent and address technical issues.

Retention
JII will retain your personal data for as long as it needs in order to provide the services on the Platform to you, or for other legitimate purposes such as resolving disputes, safety and security reasons, or complying with its legal obligations. How long JII retains your Personal Data will depend on a number of factors, such as:
The purpose for processing your personal data (such as whether JII needs to retain the data to provide the services on the Platform);
The amount, nature, and sensitivity of the personal data;
The potential risk of harm from unauthorised use or disclosure;
Any legal requirement that JII is subject to and which would require retention of your personal data.
Cookies and similar technologies have varying retention periods depending on their purpose.
Your rights
You may have certain rights in relation to your personal data, for example, you may have the right to:
Request whether JII processes personal data about about you and if so, request access to your personal data and receive information about how your personal data is processed;
Request to delete your personal data from JII’s records;
Request to correct your personal data;
Withdraw your consent at any time, where JII relies on consent as the legal basis for processing;
Request to restrict the processing of object against JII processing your personal data;
Object to the processing of your personal data for marketing purposes.
Lodge a complaint with a local data protection authority, which is in JII’s case the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens). Please note that you can only file a complaints, after first directing your complaints to JII and upon the condition that the complaint remains unresolved.

SECURITY OF DATA
JII implements appropriate commercially reasonable technical, and organizational measures designed to protect your Personal Data from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or destruction. While no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, JII continuously improves its safeguards.
AUTOMATED DECISION-MAKING
JII does not make decisions based solely on automated processing that produce legal or similarly significant effects. If this changes, JII will provide required information about the logic involved and your rights.
INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS
Personal data may be transferred to and processed in countries outside the EEA. Where such transfers occur to countries outside the EEA not offering an adequate level of data protection, JII will ensure that appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (Commission Decision (EU) 2021/914) are put in place and, when required, JII carries out transfer risk assessments and will adapt supplementary measures.
JII’s hosting and service providers may be located in various jurisdictions. JII ensures that all such providers maintain appropriate measures to enable that your personal is equally protected.
Service Providers
JII may employ third-party companies and individuals to facilitate the Platform (Service Providers), provide the services on JII’s behalf, perform Platform-related services, or assist JII in analysing how the Platform is used. JII may also share information with the Service Providers, in which case it will conclude necessary data processing agreements in which it requires such parties to honour this Privacy Policy. These Service Providers have access to Personal Data only to perform these tasks on JII’s behalf and are obligated not to disclose or use it for any other purpose.
Other typical categories of recipients include cloud hosting, analytics, advertising/remarketing partners (where enabled), payment processors, customer support platforms, and security/fraud-prevention vendors.
JII may share or transfer your information with third parties and their legal advisors in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.

The Platform may contain links to other sites that are not operated by JII. If you click on a third-party link, you will be directed to that third party's site. JII strongly advises you to review the Privacy Policy of every site you visit.
JII has no control over and assumes no responsibility for the content, privacy policies or practices of any third-party sites or services.
CHILDREN'S PRIVACY
The Platform is not directed to children under the age of 13.
CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY
JII may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. JII will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
JII will let you know via email and/or a prominent notice on the Platform, prior to the change becoming effective and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy.
You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
