About Jan IngenHousz Institute

The Jan IngenHousz Institute (JII) is a open science research institute dedicated to improving photosynthesis to enhance global crop productivity, sustainability, and climate resilience. Named after the Dutch scientist who discovered photosynthesis, JII seeks to unravel this complex process under real-world conditions to advance sustainable agriculture and global food security.

Through the development of innovative sensors, research methods, and data analysis platforms, JII enables the global collection and interpretation of real-time field measurements of crop photosynthesis. By integrating expertise across engineering, data science, biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, plant physiology, and breeding, and by fostering collaboration through its openJII platform, JII unites researchers and institutions worldwide.

Located on the campus of Wageningen University & Research, JII’s independent and collaborative approach drives new insights and solutions to address the intertwined challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and population growth.
